FAQ
Here are the most popular questions from our clients. If you still have interrogations, feel free to contact us using the ''Contact Us'' tab!
What is the difference between freeze drying and lyophilization?
None, they mean the same thing! Lyophilization is the scientific word while freeze drying is the expression generally used.
Is freeze drying dangerous?
Absolutely not! It removes water by pulling a vacuum with a pump and forcing the water to sublimate from its solid state (frozen). The machine is sealed shut when in use and the products are perfectly safe to be eaten after processing, as long as you follow the storing recommendations.
Where can I buy your products?
For now, the only way to purchase our products is through this website. Go to the "Products" tab or email us at sales@cryonaut.ca for any special inquiry.
How long is the shipping process?
We are currently taking pre-orders and for this reason, delivery is expected 16 weeks after purchase.
What is the lifespan of a lyophilizer?
Well cared for, a freeze dryer will last between 10 to 20 years before requiring more advanced maintenance. All parts subject to failure over long periods of time are easily replaceable.
How long does it take to freeze dry the food?
An average of 24 hours is estimated for most foods. Many factors like food size and density as well as water content will alter the duration of the process.
How long can I keep my food after having processed it?
Storing it under vacuum in a glass container such as a mason jar is a common method that has been proven to be reliable up to 5 years. For ideal results, we suggest using our Cryonaut metalized bags, designed for a shelf life up to 30 years!
Will my food lose nutritional value in the process?
Of all known food conservation methods, lyophilization destroys the least nutritional content of foods, especially those sensitive to heat. It is widely used in pharmaceutical and biological research for this reason. For eating purposes, it is the best option combining both long-lasting storage and limited lost of nutritional value.
Do I have to buy Mylar bags to store the food?
No, glass jars can be used, but the jar seal may sometimes fail, allowing air to circulate and thus making the food perishable. Mylar bags are preffered for long term storage and reliability. Refer to our product section to buy yours today!
What is the difference between an industrial pump and the one included with my machine?
Industrial pumps are designed for much larger units and can tolerate much more residual moisture that wasn't caught by the cold trap. They require less maintenance and have been designed to operate continuously for thousands of hours. For an individual using a freeze dryer at home, the pump included in the machine we sell is more than enough to answer your needs.
